In Seven Oaks, over in Rancho Bernardo, a woman called me about a 2009 BMW 5 Series with zero working keys.
The story was the one I hear a lot on used BMWs. She bought it with one key, always meant to get a spare cut, and never got around to it. Then that key hit the concrete in her tandem parking spot. The shell split clean, the blade snapped, and the electronics inside were rattling loose. One piece had skidded under the car. She had the fob body in one hand and was describing the blade fragment still stuck in the door lock.
I told her to leave the fragment alone and not force anything.
When I got there I pulled the blade fragment out first, carefully, before anything else. Then I checked the electronics from the broken key. The internal components were still intact, which mattered. I was able to read the transponder data off what was left instead of going in cold on a full module read. That shortened the job considerably.
I decoded the lock, cut two new key blades to the vehicle, and enrolled both keys to the security module on site. Before I left, I walked her through testing both keys in the ignition and the door locks, and showed her the recovered chip from the broken fob so she understood why hanging onto the pieces had made a difference.
She went from zero keys to two in about an hour. The dealer was her backup plan, and what they were going to charge her was a lot more than what she paid me, and their earliest appointment was days out.
If your BMW key breaks, cracked shell and all, bring me the pieces. That chip is usually still good.
