I was parked on Artisan Drive near Fairbanks Ranch when the call came in. A 2014 5 Series, sitting in a private driveway off Via de la Valle, and the owner had one fob left. But with only one key showing up in the system and that key behaving inconsistently, adding a second key and sorting out why the first was flaky were both part of the same visit.

I programmed a new fob to the vehicle, enrolled it through the security module, and then went back to the original. Reseating it in the system cleared the intermittent fault. Both fobs tested solid across all functions before I packed up.

He asked about the dealer after the fact, the way people do when they're trying to figure out what they avoided. I told him honestly that for BMW key work in this generation, the dealer books it as a half-day job minimum, and the wait for a VIN-matched fob from their parts pipeline is usually measured in days. He'd saved a good chunk and had both keys working before dinner.
