Out in Ramona Highlands, near the VFW off Main Street, a guy flagged me down because his 2016 BMW 5 Series would crank but immediately die. He had already paid another locksmith to make him a replacement key. The other locksmith had cut and programmed a fob, the car recognized it, but the engine refused to run more than a second.
The other locksmith had told him the immobilizer module was failing and walked off the job. That diagnosis cost the guy money and left him stranded.
I asked him one question before I touched anything: did the previous guy mention reading the engine control unit during programming? He stared at me. He had no idea what I was talking about, which told me everything.
On this generation of BMW, the key programming process requires pulling an internal security number directly from the engine computer and writing that number into the key during the sync. Without it, the immobilizer sees a valid fob but the engine control unit never gets the release signal. The car cranks, fires briefly, and dies. It mimics a fuel or spark problem badly enough that people chase the wrong thing for hours.
I connected through the OBD port, read the security data from the engine computer, and completed the full three-way sync between the fob, the immobilizer, and the engine control unit. Started clean on the first try. I ran it three more times while he watched the screen on my tool confirming the sync was complete.
The immobilizer module was never the problem. It was the procedure.
He had already paid the first guy and was bracing to pay dealer rates on top of that. What he paid me was a fraction of what the dealer quoted him, and the job was done in his driveway.
