Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2002 BMW 5 Series Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in Casa de Oro, there is a VFW post off Campo Road where some of the regulars know each other well enough that word travels fast when something goes wrong.

A guy there had already been through one bad locksmith experience with his 2002 BMW 5 Series. The engine cranked every time, but it died the instant it tried to catch. Previous guy blamed a module and left. Took the money, left the problem.

When I got there, the car was sitting in the parking lot. He had been driving a borrowed truck for a week.

I did not start with assumptions. The first thing I checked was whether the existing key was actually enrolled or just cut. The cut looked right. The issue was the security sync. On the E39, the immobilizer system requires the key, the engine control unit, and the body electronics to all share the same internal security number. If that three-way relationship is not confirmed during programming, the engine management cuts fuel after the first crank. That is exactly what he was describing.

I connected through the OBD port, pulled the security data from the engine control unit, and completed the full enrollment. Three start tests, clean every time. I walked him through what was on the tool screen so he could see the confirmation himself, not just take my word for it.

He mentioned the dealer quote he had gotten before going the locksmith route. I told him what I charged. He laughed, not in a bad way. The first locksmith had already cost him real money for nothing. This time it was done.
