One thing worth knowing on the 2013 5 Series specifically: there's a hidden lock cylinder on the driver's door behind a small cover on the handle. A lot of owners don't find it the first time and end up waiting for a locksmith anyway without realizing the emergency blade in their fob was always the intended backup. No. That's the default answer from roadside because the dealer is their preferred solution. It's not your only option.

A mobile locksmith can handle key replacement and immobilizer work on site for the F10 5 Series. Dealers will tell you the key has to be ordered, coded, and registered by their technicians with their equipment. That's partly true in that it does require proper diagnostic tools, but those tools are not exclusive to the dealer. I carry the equipment to cut a replacement blade to your vehicle and program a new fob through the diagnostic port, right in your driveway or wherever the car is sitting.

Skipping the tow also means skipping the tow bill, the intake wait, and the multi-day turnaround that comes with most dealer service lanes on key work.

What documents do I need before you can make a key for my BMW?

A valid photo ID and proof of ownership. Registration works. Title works. I cross-reference the name on the document against the VIN on the dashboard plate and door jamb before any key work starts. That's the same thing the dealer requires, just done on site in a couple of minutes instead of at a service counter.

The VIN also tells me the exact key configuration for your specific build, so it's doing double duty.

The fob is dead but the car is unlocked. Can I still drive it without a working key?

Sometimes, with a catch. The F10 5 Series has a backup procedure where you hold the fob body up to the area around the start button. There's an antenna built into that area specifically for this scenario. If the fob battery is just dead but the fob hardware is intact, the car can read the transponder passively at close range and the immobilizer will clear, letting you start the car.

If the fob itself is damaged, cracked, or the internal electronics are gone, that passive read won't happen. You'll see a warning on the cluster indicating the key isn't recognized and the car won't start regardless of what you do with the button. That's when you need a replacement fob that's been properly registered to your vehicle, not just a new battery in a broken housing.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

Short answer: no. Not on this vehicle.

The 2013 5 Series immobilizer requires the new fob to be registered through a diagnostic interface. There's no ignition-turn sequence or button combo that adds a key on this system. Anyone selling you a "self-programmable" fob for this car is either wrong about the vehicle or selling you something that won't work.

Buying the fob blank online is fine if you want to save a little on parts, but it still needs a technician with the right equipment to pair it. Bring it along when you call and we can work with it.
