She'd just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions in the back seat. The 2017 Suburban sat in the parking lot and would not start. She pressed the button, nothing. Tried the backup hold-fob-to-the-button method, nothing. The fob was gone and she had no idea about the hidden cylinder.
It was 7pm. Pharmacy closed at 9.
She called the dealer. Closed. Then she called me. I was about 20 minutes out of Downtown Ramona.
When I got there, I popped the cap on the driver's door handle, used the insert blade to get her in, and then plugged into the OBD port to see what we were dealing with. Her fob had a dead CR2032 and a loose internal antenna connection from a drop at some point. The fob itself was done.
I had a replacement fob in the van, paired it to her Suburban through the diagnostic port, and ran through the full function check: lock, unlock, remote start, liftgate, panic, all of it. Then I walked her through the backup start procedure and showed her the hidden cylinder on the door handle so she'd never be caught off guard again.
From her first call to the engine running was just under 50 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer was closed anyway and would have been a next-morning appointment at minimum.
Sometimes it's not about speed versus the dealer. It's just about whether the car runs tonight or tomorrow.
