1997 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1997 Ford Expedition Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was at dinner in Del Mar Village when her purse walked out the door. Someone lifted it off the back of her chair while she was talking. Keys, wallet, phone, everything.

She borrowed the hostess's phone and called the police, then her husband, then me. Her 1997 Ford Expedition was sitting in the restaurant lot with no way to get into it.

Her husband had already called the dealer by the time I arrived. They wanted the truck towed in, said they'd need a few days to source the key blank, and recommended a full rekey on top of that since the stolen key could still open the doors. The number they quoted was not small.

I got there while she was still finishing the police report. Because this was a mechanical key, the job was about the lock, not the computer. I decoded the lock cylinder on site, cut a new key blade to match, and verified it in the door and the ignition. Then I cut a second one so she'd have a spare. Both worked before she put the pen down on the report.

I also walked her through what the stolen key could and couldn't do. It could still physically insert into the lock, but with her circumstances I recommended she get the locks rekeyed when she had time, so that key became useless entirely. That's a separate job, her call on timing.

She drove home that night. The dealer comparison came up once, briefly, and then she stopped talking about it.
