2021 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2021 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already in La Mesa when the call came in. Mt. Helix, Friday night, couple coming out from a late movie. Their 2021 Ford Expedition would not start and neither of them had ever had a smart key fail on them before. They thought the car was broken. They were already mentally resigning themselves to leaving it in the lot and figuring it out Monday.

They called me just to ask if anything could be done that night.

I was about 15 minutes out, which I told them, and I already had the right fob stocked in the van. When I pulled up they were standing next to the Expedition looking at it like it had personally let them down. I asked how long they had owned it. About two years, never thought about the key once.

First thing I checked was the battery. CR2450, which is a bigger cell than most fobs use, and it was reading nearly flat. Swapped it on the spot. Still getting an inconsistent start response, which told me there was also a sync issue, so I connected my programming tool and re-paired the fob to the vehicle. The whole sequence took under 30 minutes.

When the start button responded clean on the first press, the guy just said, "That's it?" That's it.

They drove home that Friday. The dealer would have meant waiting until Monday, scheduling time, and paying a lot more for the privilege of waiting. When the right parts are already in the van, a Friday night call is the same job as a Tuesday morning.
