Out in Rancho Del Rey, a woman had been driving her 1999 Ford Expedition on one key for years. Bought it used, always meant to get a copy made, never did.

The key finally gave out the worst possible way: the blade cracked at the pivot point and snapped off in the door lock while she was trying to get in. She was holding the fob housing in one hand and the blade was stuck inside the cylinder.

She called me before she called a tow truck, which was the right move.

I got out there with my tools and extracted the broken blade fragment from the door lock first. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it to get the key cut data. The fob housing was cracked but the transponder chip inside was completely intact, and I was able to pull the chip data from it rather than running a full all-keys-lost procedure. That saved real time. I cut two new key blades to the vehicle and rebuilt her original fob into a new shell with the chip transferred over, then cut a second key and enrolled it as her spare.

The whole thing ran about 40 minutes on the curb outside her apartment. She watched me pull the chip out of the broken housing and asked if it was supposed to be that small. That moment right there is why I always show people the chip before it goes into the new shell.

She left with two working keys and a spare for the first time since she bought the truck. The dealer had quoted her a number that assumed she'd be towing it in and starting from zero. Since we weren't starting from zero, she saved a good chunk.
