I got a call from a guy in Coronado Village who was standing next to his 1998 Ford Expedition in a parking lot near the village center. His key blade had snapped clean inside the ignition. Not bent, not stuck. Broken in half, with the shank lodged in the cylinder.
He'd already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder would have to be drilled out and replaced. New cylinder, new keys, the whole thing. He didn't like that answer and called me for a second opinion.
I drove out and took a look. The break was clean, which is actually the easier scenario. I used a broken key extractor to work the fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces inside. Slow and deliberate. The cylinder came through fine.
Once the fragment was out, I decoded the lock by reading the wafer positions directly. That gave me the cut depths I needed to produce a working replacement blade on site. The transponder chip in the key also needed to be enrolled so the vehicle's immobilizer would recognize it. I handled that through the OBD port.
The original lock worked perfectly with the new key. Nothing drilled, nothing replaced, nothing damaged.
He mentioned the dealer was going to be his next call if I couldn't sort it. I reminded him the dealer doesn't come to the parking lot. He laughed. The job was done in the lot, on a weekday afternoon, for a fraction of what a cylinder replacement would have cost him.
