2006 Ford Expedition Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was out near Bay Marina in National City when this one came in. A guy had been nursing his 2006 Expedition ignition for about three weeks. Key would go in fine, then just sit there. He'd pull it out, blow on it, try again, wait, and eventually it would catch. Some days worse than others.
He'd already been to the dealer. They looked at it and quoted him a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and programming. He thought the number sounded high for what seemed like a minor annoyance, but he was close to booking it anyway.
His neighbor told him to call a locksmith first.
I got to the parking lot and watched him do the whole ritual: insert, pause, wiggle slightly, wait. Then I pulled out my inspection light and looked at the cylinder face. Worn wafers. The key wasn't slipping because the cylinder was dead. It was slipping because the wafer stack had enough play to hesitate under load.
I decoded the existing key, replaced the worn wafers, and cut a fresh key matched to the repaired cylinder. Then I programmed the transponder and paired the remote back up using the factory FCC ID on the fob as the reference. Tested the buttons, tested the crank, walked the locks.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away, which I don't mind. When I showed him the old wafers so he could see the wear pattern, he just nodded and said that explained everything.
The dealer wasn't wrong that the cylinder was the source of the problem. They just skipped the step where you find out whether it can be fixed before you replace it.
