2017 Ford Expedition
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman staying somewhere out near Bonsall, passing through Fallbrook on a longer road trip. She'd walked out to her 2017 Expedition in the parking lot and the door handle just ignored her.

Fob buttons did nothing. The start button inside was unresponsive. Dead fob battery, most likely, but she was already past that possibility in her head -- she'd gone straight to "the car is broken."

She called the dealer first. They told her to tow it in. Earliest they could look at it was the following afternoon, and that was before factoring in what the actual replacement would cost or how long it would take to source a fob.

I drove out to her that same evening. The fob battery was genuinely dead -- CR2032, fully flat -- but when I dropped a fresh one in and reseated it, passive entry still wasn't responding correctly. That told me something else was going on. Ran diagnostics through the OBD port, found a communication fault with the vehicle's security system that had built up over time, probably from the battery draining slowly rather than all at once. Enrolled a new fob, cleared the fault, walked every function: door handles, liftgate, remote lock and unlock, start button. Everything came back.

She was back on the road that evening. The dealer route would have meant a tow, an overnight wait, and a bill that was a significant multiple of what she paid me. She mentioned she hadn't even known mobile locksmiths handled this kind of work. Most people don't, until they need it.
