Out in Rancho Del Oro, I got a call from a guy who had been sitting on his driveway for about an hour before he reached me. His 2005 Expedition started fine that morning. By afternoon, nothing. Just a security light and a no-start.

He had already pulled the fob apart and put a new CR2032 in it. Buttons still worked, doors locked and unlocked fine. But every time he turned the key, the security light would flash and the engine would crank without catching. He was convinced the key had gone bad overnight.

I walked him through what I was seeing before I even pulled a tool. The remote side was clearly alive, because the doors responded. The issue was the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder signal during crank. On these, that usually means the key's transponder data has dropped out of the vehicle's memory, or the ignition reader coil is weak, or someone had tried a spare that wasn't programmed and it confused the system.

He mentioned he had tried a second key, one he had made at a hardware store about a year ago. That was it. An unrecognized key turned in the ignition too many times will put some Ford immobilizer systems into a lockout state as a theft deterrent.

I connected my programmer at the OBD port, cleared the lockout condition, re-registered both his original key and a new spare I cut on site. Tested each one, confirmed the security light cleared on start, walked every button on both fobs. Done in about 40 minutes, in his driveway, without a tow truck or a dealer appointment.

He had already resigned himself to a tow across town. Saved him that headache entirely.
