My Expedition cranks but stalls immediately after starting. Is this a key or immobilizer problem?

Classic sign of a security system fault. When the immobilizer doesn't recognize the key during start, it allows the engine to briefly fire and then cuts it almost immediately. The truck isn't broken mechanically. It's doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it doesn't see a valid key signal.

This can happen after a key wears out internally, after a used PCM gets swapped in without going through the proper relearn procedure, or sometimes after a dead battery event that disrupts the module's memory. It can also happen if someone tries to use a key that was never properly programmed to that specific vehicle.

The fix is not mechanical. It requires a programmer connected to the OBD port to read the fault, walk through the relearn sequence, and confirm the key is properly recognized. If you're sitting in Libby Lake with a truck that starts and immediately dies, that's a mobile job I can handle on site.

I bought a replacement remote head key online. Can I program it myself?

The remote portion can sometimes be self-programmed using an onboard sequence if you still have at least one working, already-programmed key in hand. The transponder side is a different story. On the 2011 Expedition, programming the transponder chip in a new key to the immobilizer requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There is no ignition-turn trick or button sequence that handles the chip side on this vehicle.

So if you bought a key online: if you have a working spare, call me and I can likely use the onboard method to handle the remote function, then take care of the transponder with my programmer. If you have no working keys at all, the full reset has to go through the diagnostic port regardless. Either way, the blank you bought online is usable, you just still need someone with the right tools to finish the job.
