When a 2004 Ford Expedition key is done wrong, it doesn't just "kind of work." It fails. The engine might crank but not start. The remote might lock but not unlock. Or the key programs initially but the immobilizer rejects it after a drive cycle and you're stranded again.
A customer at the laundromat in Otay Mesa had a key made by another locksmith for her Expedition that stopped working after about eight days. Her fob also had a weak CR2032 battery contributing to the intermittent issues, so I swapped that too.
The replacement I made has been working for months and cost her $185. Dealer would have charged $395. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip inside it.
