2018 Ford Expedition Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in the Kit Carson Park Area of Escondido had done everything right, or so he thought.
He ordered a replacement fob online, watched a video about swapping the battery, popped the new CR2450 in, and figured he was set. Except the Expedition wouldn't acknowledge the fob at all. No lock response, no start. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning every time he pressed the start button, and he was running the engine off the one fob he hadn't touched yet.
He called me on a Tuesday mid-morning. He had a school pickup at 2:30 and a meeting before that and genuinely could not lose the afternoon.
I came to his driveway. The fob he had bought online was a good blank, correct button count, correct battery. The problem was it had never been enrolled to his vehicle. An unprogrammed fob is just plastic. It does nothing until the vehicle's immobilizer accepts it, and that takes diagnostic equipment and a timed security sequence built into Ford's system.
I plugged in at the OBD port, walked through the enrollment, and registered both the original fob and the new one. Then I did what I always do at the end: walked every button on both fobs, tested the start, checked that the vehicle recognized each one independently. Seven minutes of button-checking at the end saves a callback.
He made his meeting. He made pickup. And he had a spare key for the first time since he bought the truck, which he admitted had been on his to-do list for over a year.
