1996 Ford Mustang Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out near Fernbrook on a Sunday, a woman flagged me down after church. Not really flagged me down, she'd already called, but she was standing outside waiting in the parking lot with that specific look people get when they've already been through it once and don't trust the next person either.

She had a 1996 Mustang and a story. A different locksmith had come out, taken her money, handed her a key, and left. The car would crank, catch for a second or two, and die. Every time. The other tech told her it was a module problem and that she needed a dealer. She almost believed him.

It wasn't a module problem. The key blank was cut right, but the transponder had never been fully enrolled. The security system was accepting the signal temporarily and then rejecting it because the programming sequence hadn't completed properly. The key data never wrote to permanent memory. Two-second start-and-die is exactly what that looks like.

I connected through the OBD port, cleared out the incomplete data from the previous attempt, and ran a clean programming sequence with the full security timer allowed to complete. No shortcuts. When it was done I confirmed the key was properly stored in the system before I even handed it back to her.

She turned the key, it started, and it stayed running. She just sat there for a second with her hand still on the key like she was waiting for it to die again.

She paid a fraction of what the dealer would have charged for the same work, and she'd already paid the first locksmith on top of that, which I couldn't undo. What I could do was make sure she left with a car that actually started.
