2018 Ford Mustang
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement smart key last on a 2018 Mustang?

A long time, realistically. The immobilizer pairing does not expire or degrade on its own. Battery changes are the main maintenance item, and the CR2450 in this fob typically lasts a year or two depending on how often the buttons get pressed. Worn button pads on the fob shell are the other thing that catches up over time, usually showing up as a button you have to press twice to get a response. Neither of those is a programming problem.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. Every key we make is covered under our warranty. That said, when a properly programmed key starts acting up after the fact, the car itself is usually worth looking at before the key. The 2018 Mustang's vehicle security system can flag a key and throw a key-not-detected warning if it sees too many failed start attempts in a row, and clearing that condition sometimes needs diagnostic equipment rather than a new fob.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2018 Mustang. Can you still make a new one on-site?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2018 Mustang is a job we handle in the field. It takes longer than adding a spare to a car that already has a working key, because the process involves resetting the vehicle security system before new keys can be enrolled. That reset has a built-in timed sequence, so the appointment runs closer to 45 to 60 minutes.

Q: Can I program a second 2018 Mustang smart key myself if I already have one working key?

No. The 2018 Mustang smart key system does not have a self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn routine, no button combination, nothing you can do from the driver's seat. A new fob has to be enrolled using professional diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. If you bought a fob online thinking you could save some money on the programming side, the fob itself is not usable until someone with the right tools pairs it. That is where we come in.

2018 Ford Mustang Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was already running in Otay Mesa that Friday night when the call came in. A couple near Nestor had come out of a movie to a 2018 Mustang that would not respond to anything. Fob completely dead. No lock, no unlock, no start. They had no idea the car had a backup start procedure and figured they were stranded until Monday when a dealer opened.

They called me mostly just to ask if anything could be done at that hour.

I was fifteen minutes out. The right fob blank and a fresh CR2450 were already in labeled drawers in the van. I do not order when someone calls.

When I got there, the battery in their fob was so far gone the fob was not even waking up. Swapped the CR2450, confirmed the fob paired correctly with my programming equipment, walked the buttons one by one. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. Everything live. Push-to-start on the first press.

Before I left I showed them the backup start procedure, the one where you hold the fob body directly against the start button if the battery ever dies again. The guy looked at me like I had just told him the car had a secret compartment.

They drove home that night. The dealer would have meant leaving the car in a parking lot until Monday and paying a lot more for the privilege. When the parts are already in the van, a 9pm Friday call is the same job as a Tuesday morning.

Ford Mustang Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2018 Mustang?▼

We start with fresh, verified blanks built to the factory spec for this fob. The reason that matters: Ford's smart key system on the 2018 Mustang is particular about what it will accept. There are aftermarket fobs out in the market that will unlock the doors fine but will not complete the immobilizer pairing, so the car just will not start.
