The Torrey Pines stretch of Del Mar is mostly quiet residential streets running up toward the bluffs, and that is where I got the call on a Tuesday afternoon.
The owner had bought the Mustang used a few years back with one key. She always meant to get a spare made. She never did. Then one morning she pulled the key out of the door lock and the blade snapped at the neck, right where the metal meets the plastic head. The blade was stuck in the lock cylinder. She had the head in her hand and nothing else.
When I arrived, the first thing I checked was whether the chip inside the broken head was still intact. The housing was cracked but the transponder itself was undamaged. That mattered, because it meant I could clone the chip data over to a new blank instead of starting from scratch with an all-keys-lost procedure. All-keys-lost takes longer and costs more, so intact chip data is good news.
I extracted the broken blade from the door lock with a broken key extractor, then used the lock cylinder itself to decode the key cut. Cut two new blades to match, transferred the cloned chip data into the new keys, tested both in the ignition, and confirmed the engine started and stayed running on each one.
The whole call took about 40 minutes. She had two working keys when I left and a door lock that turned smoothly again. The dealer had quoted her the full all-keys-lost rate because that is what their system defaults to when you show up without a complete working key. She saved a good chunk going the mobile route, and she did not have to tow the car anywhere.
