Sometimes a worn key head where the plastic is cracked can cause the chip to sit at the wrong angle relative to the reader ring in the ignition collar. It's a surprisingly common detail on 25-year-old keys. Try the spare if you have one. If the spare starts it clean, the problem is the key, not the car.
