I got a call from a mechanic shop over in Sweetwater, National City. One of their customers had a 2016 Mustang sitting in the bay with a key problem that had already gone sideways.
Another locksmith had tried to program a replacement smart key. Partway through the sequence, the Mustang's battery dropped voltage. The programming didn't complete. The body control module threw security faults, the key-not-detected warning stayed lit, and nothing was communicating right. The other tech packed up his stuff and told the shop to tow it to the dealer. Then he left.
The mechanic called me.
I got there and put my jump pack on the battery before touching anything else. Voltage was low enough that I wouldn't have started a programming attempt without it. Once the system was stabilized, I connected my diagnostic equipment and cleared the security faults so I was working from a clean state instead of trying to push through errors. That part alone takes patience because you have to confirm the module is actually ready before you start the key registration, not just assume.
The fob learned on the first full attempt after that. I walked every function, push-button start, door lock and unlock from the handle, and all five buttons, before I called it done. Then I spent a few minutes with the shop guys explaining what caused the original failure so they'd know to flag battery voltage any time someone comes in for key work on a proximity system.
Total time was close to an hour and a half. Longer than a clean add-a-key job, but this wasn't a clean job. The owner saved a significant amount compared to a flatbed ride and a dealer queue. That part almost felt like an afterthought once the car was running again.
