2004 Ford Mustang
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 Ford Mustang Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out in San Pasqual Valley called me on a weekday morning. He had a 2004 Mustang and one key that had stopped being recognized by the car. Engine would crank, fire up, and then die within a second or two. Classic anti-theft behavior. He thought the ignition was failing.

It wasn't the ignition. That start-and-stall pattern is the immobilizer doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The transponder in his key had given up. These chips don't always die dramatically. Sometimes they just get tired, especially on a twenty-year-old key that has been on a heavy keychain in the California heat.

I drove out to him. San Pasqual Valley is a good stretch from town but it is the kind of area where people don't want to deal with a tow and a dealer trip. I cut a new key blade to match his locks, programmed the transponder on site, and tested it through a full start cycle before I called it done.

He mentioned he had already called the dealer and was told to tow it in, leave it overnight, and pick it up the next afternoon. That's a tow bill, a rental, and a wait. He paid a fraction of that, in his own driveway, in about forty minutes.

The Mustang started clean. He revved it once like he was checking if it was real.
