My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. On the 2000 Mustang the ignition cylinder is a conventional setup, which means broken key extraction is a clean mechanical job. The bigger issue is what happens after: the transponder chip inside that key head may be intact but it's no longer readable by the immobilizer ring once the key is snapped and out of position. So even if extraction goes perfectly, you still need a new key cut and programmed before the car will start. We handle both in one visit. What exactly is a transponder key, and why does the 2000 Mustang need one?

Or the key simply was never programmed, which happens a lot with used cars that come with only one key and that key turns out to be a cut-only copy with no chip enrollment.

Don't keep cranking it. Repeated failed attempts don't help and can complicate the session when a programmer does connect. Note whether the light flashes rapidly or stays solid, because that behavior tells a tech something about where the fault is sitting before they even plug in.

I bought a used 2000 Mustang and it only came with one key. Do I need a second one?

Strongly recommended, and here's the practical reason: if you ever lose that one key entirely, the all-keys-lost procedure for this vehicle requires two working programmed keys to complete the relearn. Yes. That start-then-stall pattern is a classic sign the immobilizer is not fully authorizing the key. The engine fires on the initial crank but the system cuts fuel shortly after because the transponder handshake didn't complete cleanly. It can happen with a failing chip, a damaged transponder ring, or a key that's partially programmed. It can also happen if the key is genuine but the enrollment was done incorrectly at some point. If the key turns but the engine dies within two or three seconds every time, that points to an anti-theft component we diagnose and handle on site. It's not always a full system replacement. Sometimes it's a ring connector, sometimes it's the key itself.
