My key broke off in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. On the 1997 Mustang the ignition cylinder is a conventional rotating barrel, and a broken key in there is a standard extraction job. The part people do not think about is what happens to the transponder chip when the key snaps. The chip sits in the head, so once the head is gone, the immobilizer has nothing to read. The engine may crank and stall or not start at all depending on where the break happened. We pull the fragment, decode the lock from what is left, and cut and program a full replacement. No reason to reuse a worn key that already broke once.

What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 1997 Mustang use one?

The key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. No battery, completely passive. When you turn the key, the antenna ring around the ignition barrel energizes the chip and reads a code. If the code matches what the immobilizer has on file, the engine runs. If it does not match, or if there is no chip at all, the engine starts briefly and dies within a couple of seconds. That stall is the system doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Ford introduced this across several models in the mid-1990s, and the Mustang was among the early adopters. A key cut to the correct profile with no chip, or with an unprogrammed chip, will fit the lock and turn it but will not keep the engine running. Programming is the step that makes it a real working key.

My dash is showing a key warning and the Mustang stalls right after it starts. What is going on?

That start-and-stall pattern, usually within one to two seconds of ignition, is the immobilizer doing its job. It saw either no chip signal or one it did not recognize.

First thing to check: is this the original key or a copy? A lot of hardware store copies are cut correctly but have no chip, so they work fine on older cars without the system and fail on this one. Second: look at the plastic head of the key. If it is cracked or the key has been through something rough, the chip can be damaged even if the key still looks usable.

Do not keep cycling the ignition trying to get it to catch. Repeated failed attempts can complicate the situation and make the programming job longer. Call a locksmith who has the equipment to read the system and reprogram or replace the key on site.

I only have one working key for my 1997 Mustang. Can I program a second one myself?

There is an onboard add-a-key sequence on these early Ford transponder systems, but it requires two already-programmed working keys to initiate. If you only have one, that sequence does not work. You need a programmer to enroll the new key directly. The good news is this is a well-documented, older system and a mobile locksmith can handle it on site without a dealer visit. Getting that second key made while you still have the first one is the right move, because all-keys-lost on any transponder vehicle costs more and takes longer than adding a spare.

Someone told me I can just use a regular non-chip key on my 1997 Mustang to save money. Is that true?

Accepted Answer

No. A plain metal key will turn the ignition but the engine will stall within seconds. The immobilizer does not care how well the blade is cut. It is looking for the chip signal, and a blank key without a programmed chip will never satisfy that check. Anyone selling you an unchiped key cut for this car is either mistaken about the year or hoping you do not test it before you pay. The transponder blank costs a little more, but it is the only thing that actually works.
