A construction worker in Downtown Oceanside called me at 6:45 in the morning. Shift started at 7. His foreman was already on site and he was standing next to his Mustang in the parking lot off Coast Highway, fob dead, car locked, going nowhere.
He said he'd changed one battery the night before and it worked just long enough to get home. By morning, nothing. Push-to-start wouldn't respond, the door handle wasn't sensing the fob, and he'd already tried holding the fob against the start button to see if that would coax a low-battery start. It didn't.
I'm set up and rolling by 6am, so I was there in under 25 minutes. The issue was the second CR2025. He'd replaced only one of the two cells. The remaining original was reading near zero. Both contacts had a little corrosion from the old batteries sitting in there. Cleaned them out, seated two fresh CR2025 cells correctly, tested range from across the lot.
Then I confirmed the key was still properly enrolled before I let him drive. No sense handing someone a fob that works at three feet and fails at twenty. Everything checked out. I cut him a spare blade for backup while I was there.
He clocked in at 7:15. The dealer conversation never came up because it never needed to.
