2017 Ford Mustang
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long should a replacement key last on one of these?

Years, realistically. The immobilizer enrollment itself doesn't wear out or expire. What degrades over time is mechanical: button pads get soft and spongy, the shell cracks if it takes a hard drop, and batteries need a swap every couple of years depending on how often you're using the remote functions. We put two fresh CR2025 cells in every fob we deliver, so you're starting from zero on the battery clock. The programming side should outlast the car.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us. Every key we make carries a warranty and we'll come back out. That said, when a correctly programmed fob quits after a short time, the issue is usually the vehicle, not the key. A blown fuse in the right circuit can kill key detection entirely and make a perfectly good fob look like the problem.

Q: My Mustang starts fine but the door handles aren't sensing the fob. Is the key going bad?

Not necessarily. Passive door handle detection and the start function use different parts of the system. If the car starts when you have the fob inside but the exterior handles aren't responding, the fob itself is likely fine. This comes up on these Mustangs in forum threads pretty regularly. The handle antennas or the wiring to them can fail independently. Try the lock and unlock buttons on the fob manually and see if those work normally.

Q: I have one working key. Can I add a spare without erasing the key I already have?

Yes, and that's the right time to do it. Adding a spare while you still have a working key is faster and simpler than all-keys-lost, and the existing key stays enrolled throughout the process. All-keys-lost requires a full immobilizer reset with a timed sequence, which takes longer and costs more. If you're down to one fob, a parking lot in Downtown Oceanside is not where you want to find out what all-keys-lost feels like.

2017 Ford Mustang Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A construction worker in Downtown Oceanside called me at 6:45 in the morning. Shift started at 7. His foreman was already on site and he was standing next to his Mustang in the parking lot off Coast Highway, fob dead, car locked, going nowhere.

He said he'd changed one battery the night before and it worked just long enough to get home. By morning, nothing. Push-to-start wouldn't respond, the door handle wasn't sensing the fob, and he'd already tried holding the fob against the start button to see if that would coax a low-battery start. It didn't.

I'm set up and rolling by 6am, so I was there in under 25 minutes. The issue was the second CR2025. He'd replaced only one of the two cells. The remaining original was reading near zero. Both contacts had a little corrosion from the old batteries sitting in there. Cleaned them out, seated two fresh CR2025 cells correctly, tested range from across the lot.

Then I confirmed the key was still properly enrolled before I let him drive. No sense handing someone a fob that works at three feet and fails at twenty. Everything checked out. I cut him a spare blade for backup while I was there.

He clocked in at 7:15. The dealer conversation never came up because it never needed to.

Ford Mustang Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys for the 2017 Mustang?▼

We use new, verified blanks built to OEM spec, meaning they carry the factory FCC ID, the correct transponder chip, and the right shell for this fob. That matters more than people realize. Owners have bought fobs online that unlock the doors fine but won't start the engine, or that program partway and then drop out. In some cases the blank was the wrong spec entirely, just close enough to look right in the listing.
