2016 Infiniti QX50
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More, and it's worth understanding why. When you have a working key in hand, adding a spare is a standard OBD programming session. When all keys are lost, the process is different. The security data in the body control module has to be accessed, a PIN extracted, and new keys enrolled from scratch. That takes more time and more specialized tooling. There's also real risk if the wrong equipment is used during an all-keys-lost procedure on Nissan and Infiniti systems.

Q: Are aftermarket Infiniti smart keys worth buying, or should I stick with OEM?

Professional-grade aftermarket keys built to OEM spec work reliably. The cheap clone fobs sold on Amazon and eBay are a different story. Locksmiths who work Nissan and Infiniti platforms regularly report getting calls from owners who bought a fob online and then can't find anyone willing to program it because the internal electronics don't meet spec. Some arrive with cracked housings or buttons that fail within a few months.

Q: The key-not-detected warning keeps popping up even though my fob battery is new. What's going on?

A few things can cause this. First, check that the replacement CR2032 is seated flat with good contact on both terminals. A slightly cocked battery reads as low voltage. Second, look at where you're standing when it happens. Certain materials in door handles and center consoles on this generation can interfere with the antenna at close range.

Q: Can I program a second 2016 QX50 intelligent key myself at home?

No. The 2016 QX50 intelligent key system does not have an owner-accessible add-a-key sequence. There's no ignition-turn procedure or button combination that will enroll a new fob. Programming requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. If you bought a fob online thinking you'd handle the rest yourself, you'll still need a locksmith or dealer with the right software to pair it to your vehicle.

2016 Infiniti QX50 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Berry Park, over in Imperial Beach, who had his only fob stop responding one morning. His QX50 was sitting in covered parking, push-button start, and the car wouldn't acknowledge the key at all. He had already started looking up flatbed numbers assuming a tow was the only path forward. I told him to hold off.

When I got there he met me in the parking structure. The fob was dead, no response, no lock or unlock, nothing. He had one key, it was the only one, and it was done.

I connected my diagnostic equipment through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure for the Infiniti intelligent key system. New fob, programmed on site, emergency blade cut to his vehicle. The whole job was done before he finished his second cup of coffee. He kept asking if that was really it.

He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer quoted him over the phone, and he didn't lose his car to a flatbed for two days. That's the job. Nothing dramatic, just done in his parking spot before lunch.

Infiniti QX50 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2016 Infiniti QX50 key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Infiniti stores tend to charge a significant amount for a smart key replacement once you add in the fob, programming, and any diagnostic fees they tack on separately. With EZ Car Keyz you get the fob, the emergency blade cut to your vehicle, and the programming done on site in Berry Park or anywhere in Imperial Beach, all in one call.
