It is a guided sequence, timed by the system, and it ends with a confirmation on the cluster that the new key has been accepted. The emergency insert blade gets cut to the car at the same time so he has a physical backup if the fob battery ever goes flat.
From connection to confirmation was under thirty minutes. He watched the whole thing from the shade of his porch.
