I got a call from a landscape photographer who had been shooting out near the canyon overlook east of Lakeside, over in the Winter Gardens stretch. He figured the fob slipped out of his vest pocket somewhere on the trail. His 2020 Infiniti QX50 was sitting in the dirt pullout, completely locked, with no key and no way in.
He had already called another locksmith before me. That guy's plan was to drill the emergency lock cylinder. The quote was steep, and the job would have left the cylinder destroyed.
I decoded the door lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions without touching anything destructive. That gave me the cut depths I needed. I cut a new key blade to match, then moved to the OBD port for the immobilizer work. Because both fobs were gone, this was a full all-keys-lost procedure: PIN retrieval, module reset, and pairing the new fob so the vehicle recognizes it as authorized. The old fobs, wherever they are on that trail, are now erased and can't start the car.
When I was done, I walked him through everything: remote lock, remote unlock, the remaining buttons, and the emergency insert key. His original door lock cylinder was untouched.
The other locksmith's approach would have left him with a drilled-out cylinder on top of the key cost. That's a bad day on top of a bad day. He saved a good chunk going a different direction.
