Got a call from a guy in Rancho Santa Fe Village on a Tuesday morning. He was in his driveway off one of the quieter roads near the village center, already late for something, and his 1999 Lexus ES would not start. Engine cranked fine. Battery was good. Just cranked and cranked and never caught. He had already tried his spare key, same result.

The transponder inside the key head is a passive device -- no battery, no moving parts -- but it can fail, especially after this many years and that kind of daily abuse.
I cut a new key blade to the vehicle, programmed the transponder, and tested the start right in his driveway. First turn, started clean. The whole thing took about 40 minutes including diagnosis.
He mentioned he had called the dealer earlier that morning. They told him to tow it in and they would look at it in a few days. A few days was not going to work for him. That part of the conversation was short. He had somewhere to be.
