2006 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2006 Lexus ES?

The programming does not wear out. Once a key is registered to this vehicle, it stays registered. What degrades over time is the physical fob: button pads get mushy, the shell cracks if it takes enough drops, and the battery needs swapping every year or two depending on how often you use remote functions. We install a fresh CR1632 with every key we make and use housings built for daily use.

Q: What if the replacement key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. The work is covered under our warranty. That said, when a properly programmed key goes flaky shortly after the job, the fob itself is rarely the cause. On this generation of Lexus smart key, forum owners have tracked intermittent failures back to a bent or oxidized battery contact inside the fob housing. A fob that got dropped hard enough to slightly shift the plate will register fine at first, then get unreliable within days.

Q: I need a replacement fob but I still have one working key. Does that change how the job goes?

Yes, and in a good way. When at least one key is already registered and working, adding a second is faster than an all-keys-lost situation. The system does not require a full reset, which means no timed countdown and no waiting period built into the procedure. For a 2006 Lexus ES, adding a spare while you still have a working fob is the cleanest, quickest version of this job.

Q: The door handle touch unlock stopped working but the start button still recognizes the fob. Is the key the problem?

Probably not the key. If the vehicle sees the fob well enough to allow a start, the fob is communicating fine. Touch unlock on the door handle is handled by a separate antenna and sensor in that door. On this generation of Lexus, owners have found that dirt or moisture around the handle sensor can kill that function on one door while everything else keeps working normally. Wipe down the handle area and retest.

2006 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

De Luz is the kind of neighborhood where you really notice when a car is down. It is ranch land and long private roads. Rideshare does not come out there, and neighbors are not always close.

A woman called me on a Monday morning. Her 2006 Lexus ES was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash, and the fob had gotten intermittent over the past week before stopping entirely. She had already tried a new CR1632 from the gas station. Didn't help.

She had called the dealer before she called me. They told her to tow it in, that they would need to order the fob, and the earliest appointment was Thursday. She was not asking me about the dealer comparison. She just said, quietly, that Thursday did not work for her.

I drove out to De Luz that same afternoon.

The battery she had installed was the right size but it was a no-name cell and the voltage was already low out of the package. That happens more than people expect. I swapped in a fresh CR1632, reseated the contact, and the fob range came back immediately. Locked, unlocked, started the car, walked the perimeter and tested every button. All good.

While I was there I also cut and programmed a second key so she would have a backup. That is always the move on a single-key household.

Monday call, Monday fix, out in De Luz. She did not need to tow anything anywhere.

Lexus ES Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Lexus vehicles?▼

We use fresh, unregistered blanks that meet OEM specifications for this vehicle. On the 2006 Lexus ES, the smart key system is specific about what it will accept during registration, and that matters a lot when sourcing the fob. One thing worth knowing: used OEM fobs pulled from other vehicles are a common trap. A lot of owners buy them online thinking they are getting a deal.
