2024 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

A lot more, and it's not close. When you have one working key, adding a spare is a registration job. The system already has a valid key in memory, so enrolling a second one is relatively quick. When all keys are lost on a current Lexus smart key system, the security module has to be fully reset before any new key can be registered.

Q: Are aftermarket smart keys cheaper, and will they actually work on a 2024 Lexus ES?

Aftermarket fobs are cheaper upfront. Whether they work is a different question. On current-generation Lexus smart key systems, the key has to meet the vehicle's security requirements during the programming process. Some aftermarket fobs pass that handshake; others don't, and you won't know until someone tries. If it fails, you've paid for a fob that's now useless and you still need a replacement. There's also a separate issue with used OEM fobs pulled from other vehicles.

Q: My 2024 Lexus ES is showing a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

This comes up more than you'd expect on current Lexus smart key systems, and a good battery doesn't rule out a communication problem. A few things can cause a key-not-detected warning even with a healthy fob. The antenna that reads the smart key signal is distributed through several points in the cabin and around the door handles -- if one of those antenna circuits has an issue, the car may see the key intermittently or not at all.

Q: Can I use my phone or a spare key to get into the car if my 2024 Lexus ES smart key stops working completely?

There's a mechanical backup built into the fob. The key blade stored inside can unlock the driver's door directly -- there's a covered keyhole on the handle. It won't start the car, but it gets you in. For starting, that's where it gets complicated. If the fob battery is completely dead, most current Lexus systems allow you to hold the fob body against the start button area to transmit just enough signal for the car to recognize it.

2024 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Fire Mountain, I got a call from a guy who had been sitting in a parking lot for about forty minutes trying to figure out why his 2024 Lexus ES wouldn't acknowledge his fob. The push-to-start just sat there. The door handles weren't responding to touch. He'd already tried holding the fob closer to the start button, which is the right instinct, but it still wasn't reading.

When I pulled up, first thing I did was pop the fob open and check the CR2032. It measured low -- not dead, just low enough that the car's receiver was having trouble picking up the signal consistently. Swapped the cell, reseated it properly, closed the fob back up.

Still not right. The car was reading the key now, but the smart key system was throwing a key-not-detected warning on the dash even with the fob present. That's when I went to the OBD port and ran a full read on the security module. The fob had fallen out of registration -- something that can happen after a battery runs all the way down and the key loses its pairing state.

Re-enrolled the fob through the diagnostic software, cleared the warning, walked every function: door handle touch unlock on both sides, the trunk release button, lock, unlock, and the start button with the fob inside the cabin and again with it outside. Everything came back clean.

He asked what the dealer would have said. Probably a new fob, programming fee on top of that, and a few days waiting on parts. He was back on the road in under an hour, for a fraction of what that route would have cost.

Lexus ES Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2024 Lexus ES smart key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The dealer's process on a current-generation Lexus smart key involves ordering the fob, scheduling you in, and billing separately for the key itself, the programming, and sometimes a diagnostic fee on top. That adds up fast, and you're usually waiting days for parts.
