2017 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2017 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked off National City Boulevard in Downtown National City on a Tuesday afternoon when the call came in. The owner of a 2017 Lexus ES had lost her only fob somewhere between a lunch spot and the parking structure. No spare. Car sitting there not going anywhere.

When I pulled up she was standing next to the ES looking at her phone. She had already called the dealer. They told her the car needed to come in, they would have to order the fob, and she was looking at days, not hours.

I set up at the car. The first thing I did was verify her identity and ownership, standard before I touch anything. Then I connected to the OBD port and got into the vehicle security system. All-keys-lost on this generation has a timed security delay built in at the factory level. You cannot rush it. You sit and wait while the system works through its countdown before it will accept new key registration. Owners watching this part always think something is wrong. Nothing is wrong. It just takes the time it takes.

Once the system cleared, I registered the new fob and cut the emergency blade to match the door lock. Then came the part I don't skip: I tested every button, walked the parking structure checking fob range from a distance, verified the door handle touch-unlock on both front doors, and did three clean push-to-start cycles. The last start is the one I watch the closest. Everything behaved.

She had a working key, tested and confirmed, without a tow truck and without waiting days for a dealer appointment. She told me the dealer had made it sound like there was no other option. There usually is.
