I was parked off Broadway in Downtown Lemon Grove when I got the call. A woman outside a dry cleaner with a 2016 Lexus ES that would start in the morning and then strand her by mid-afternoon. She'd already had someone else do a key replacement eight days before.
She described it the same way every time: press the start button, it flashes a key-not-detected warning, nothing. Then an hour later it works again. She thought the car had a gremlin. The previous locksmith told her it might be the car.
When I got there I ran diagnostics at the OBD port before I touched anything else. The immobilizer was logging a key-verification failure, not a communication error, not an antenna fault. The fob itself was the problem.
I pulled the fob apart on my work tray. The CR1632 was borderline, which didn't help, but that wasn't the whole story. The transponder inside that fob was the wrong chip generation for this vehicle's security system. It was close enough to get through the first handshake most of the time, but the deeper verification was failing intermittently, which is why mornings worked and afternoons didn't. Heat, slight antenna position changes, battery sag under load: any of it could tip a marginal pairing into a rejection.
I programmed a new fob using the correct chip generation, registered it properly to her vehicle's immobilizer, and put a fresh CR1632 in it. Tested it through a full hot-soak cycle before I left.
She didn't have an electrical problem. She had a key that was never right to begin with. The dealer came up later in conversation. She'd gotten a quote from them before trying the other locksmith. She spent a fraction of that number total, including the redo.
The difference between a key that works and one that fails after a week is whether whoever programmed it matched the right hardware to your actual car.
