My 2014 ES shows a key warning on the dash but the fob battery is fresh. What else could cause that?

A few things. First, double-check that the CR1632 is seated flat with solid contact on both terminals. A slightly tilted cell reads as low or dead even when it is new. Beyond that, the fob itself can develop a failed circuit even with a good battery, especially on a fob that has been dropped or gotten wet.

The other possibility people miss: if you are in the Grossmont Area near certain large parking structures or commercial buildings, RF interference can be strong enough to cause intermittent key-not-detected warnings even with a fully functional fob. Try holding the fob directly against the start button and see if the car responds. That bypasses the normal proximity read and uses a backup inductive coupling the system has for low-signal situations. If the car starts that way but not normally, you are likely dealing with a weak fob signal rather than a dead fob, and a fresh CR1632 seated correctly usually resolves it.

Can I buy a fob online and just have it programmed, or does it have to be a specific key?

You can, with one condition: the fob has to be compatible with the 2014 ES key system. Not every blank sold online is, and the listings are not always accurate. The factory FCC ID on the fob and the transponder chip generation both have to match what your vehicle expects. A fob that does not meet that spec will not register, full stop.
