2014 Lexus ES
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2014 Lexus ES Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in La Mesa, over in the Grossmont Area, a guy was visiting his parents for the holidays with his 2014 Lexus ES. He wanted a working spare before heading home, and he had a pretty pointed question before I even got started: is an aftermarket fob actually going to work, or is he paying for a problem later.

Honest question. He had done some reading and seen enough forum threads about cheap fobs that quit after six months to be skeptical.

Here is what I told him, and what I showed him. I carry aftermarket blanks that I have tested across a lot of Lexus and Toyota jobs. The transponder chip inside needs to match the generation the vehicle expects, and the circuit board has to hold up. When the sourcing is right, the daily-use experience is the same. Same button feel, same range, same behavior at the door handles and the start button. The only thing missing is the logo on the housing.

I programmed his spare on the hood of the car, right where he could watch the whole process. Connected the diagnostic tool, ran the key registration, tested all four buttons, walked both door handles, confirmed the start button saw the fob from a normal distance. The blade fit the door lock. Everything worked the way it should.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out, because the number speaks for itself. He said he already had, which is probably why he called me instead.
