Q: I have a spare key for my 2003 ES but it has been sitting in a drawer for years. Will it still work?

The transponder side will almost certainly be fine. Immobilizer enrollment on a stored key does not time out or degrade just from sitting. The remote side is a different story. A CR1616 left in a key for years will likely be dead or too weak to get reliable range. Pop the battery, replace it, and test all three buttons before you trust that spare. If the buttons come back clean, you are good.

2003 Lexus ES Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Downtown El Cajon, parked in one of the lots off Main Street. He said his key snapped off in the ignition. Not bent, not stuck. Snapped clean, with half the blade still seated in the cylinder.

When I pulled up, he had the other half in his hand, the key head with the remote buttons still attached. His face said he expected this to be a very long day.

I extracted the broken fragment from the cylinder without pulling the column apart. Once it was out, I decoded the lock, cut a fresh blade to match, and transferred the key head over to the new blade housing. Because this is a remote head key, the transponder and the remote are all one piece, so the new blade had to be married to the existing head correctly or neither the ignition nor the buttons would work right.

The programming side went through the OBD port. The immobilizer on this generation of Lexus talks back cleanly, no drama, no long countdown sequences. Total time from pulling up to him driving away was under an hour, and most of that was the careful extraction work.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a tow plus a multi-day wait just to get the broken piece out. He saved a good chunk doing it this way, and he was back on the road before lunch.
