A guy pulled off near Downtown Moorpark with half a key in his hand and the other half stuck in his Z3's ignition cylinder. He'd been wrestling with a worn key for a few weeks and finally it gave up. Another locksmith he called first told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. On a BMW roadster that's a serious repair bill before you even start talking about a new key. He found me and asked for a second opinion.
I drove out to him. The broken fragment was seated in the cylinder but hadn't spun, so the wafers were intact and undamaged. I used a proper extraction tool to work the fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions, cut a fresh key blade to match, and handled the transponder programming on site.
The new key turned the ignition on the first try. Cylinder is original, untouched, works exactly as it did before.
He mentioned what the other locksmith had quoted for drilling and cylinder replacement. I didn't say much about it. The difference spoke for itself.
