1997 BMW Z3
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than going to the BMW dealer for a Z3 key?

On a 1997 Z3, yes, by a meaningful amount. Dealers break the job into separate line items and the programming labor alone can run well over an hour at their shop rate. Owners on BMW forums consistently report walking out of the dealer having paid significantly more than a mobile locksmith would charge for the identical outcome.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming?

Yes. One price covers the key blank, cutting the blade to your vehicle, enrolling the transponder to the immobilizer, and testing before I leave. Nothing is unbundled. Dealers on these BMWs will often charge separately for the blank, the cut, the programming labor, and occasionally a diagnostic step just to read the system. You end up with a stack of line items that adds up fast. With me it's one number, stated upfront.

Q: My 1997 Z3 cranks fine but won't start. Could it be a key problem?

Cranks-but-won't-start is actually the classic symptom when the immobilizer doesn't recognize the transponder. The starter motor runs, the engine turns over, but fuel or ignition stays cut and it won't fire.

Q: Can I get a key made for my Z3 if I've lost all keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1997 Z3 is a job I handle. The process involves decoding the lock mechanically - either from the door lock or the ignition cylinder - cutting a new blade to that code, and then enrolling a new transponder key to the immobilizer. No working key needs to be present to do this. It takes longer than a straight duplicate, but it's fully doable on site in Downtown Moorpark without towing the car anywhere.

1997 BMW Z3 Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy pulled off near Downtown Moorpark with half a key in his hand and the other half stuck in his Z3's ignition cylinder. He'd been wrestling with a worn key for a few weeks and finally it gave up.

Another locksmith he called first told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced. On a BMW roadster that's a serious repair bill before you even start talking about a new key. He found me and asked for a second opinion.

I drove out to him. The broken fragment was seated in the cylinder but hadn't spun, so the wafers were intact and undamaged. I used a proper extraction tool to work the fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. Once it was clear, I decoded the lock from the wafer positions, cut a fresh key blade to match, and handled the transponder programming on site.

The new key turned the ignition on the first try. Cylinder is original, untouched, works exactly as it did before.

He mentioned what the other locksmith had quoted for drilling and cylinder replacement. I didn't say much about it. The difference spoke for itself.

BMW Z3 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 1997 BMW Z3 key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number because pricing depends on what the job actually involves - whether you have a working key we're duplicating, a broken key we're extracting, or an all-keys-lost situation where we have to decode the lock and enroll a fresh transponder from scratch. What I can tell you is it's a fraction of what the dealer route costs.
