2002 BMW Z3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Over in the St. John's Regional Medical Center neighborhood in Oxnard, a Z3 owner called me about a key that was falling apart in her hand. Classic late-model E36/7 problem.
The rubber button pad on her LX8FZV remote head key had worn through to the circuit board underneath. The chrome trim ring around the key head was flaking off in little pieces every time she pulled it out of the ignition. And the HU58 blade had developed a tiny wobble in the housing, enough that she had to wiggle it to get it into the door lock.
She had already called the dealer. They told her they would need to order a full replacement key assembly, part number 6955750, and that it could take over a week because the blank has to be ordered by VIN through BMW's system. Then she would need to bring the car in for EWS2 registration on top of that.
I met her in her driveway. Opened the key head on her hood and pulled the board. The PCF7935 chip was fine. The 315 MHz remote circuit was fine. Everything electronic was healthy. She just needed a new shell.
I transferred the guts into a fresh housing, pressed in new button pads, and used my HU58 Lishi to decode her existing blade and cut a clean replacement. Tested the remote lock, unlock, and trunk from 30 feet. Then started the car to make sure the EWS2 handshake was solid.
The whole thing took about 25 minutes. Her electronics will probably outlast two more shells if she keeps the CR2032 fresh.
