2002 BMW Z3 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman in South Winds called about her Z3. She described the key as "falling apart," which I hear a lot, but when I got to her garage it was worse than most. The rubber button pads had worn down to bare plastic, the chrome trim ring was mostly gone, and the blade had enough play in the housing that she was wiggling it around on every start. The car still ran fine. The key just looked like it had been through a decade of pocket abuse, which, at this point, it had.
She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a number for a complete replacement key, new shell, new blade, full programming. What that quote did not account for was that nothing electronic inside her key had actually failed.
I pulled the key apart on her workbench and walked her through it. The circuit board was clean. No corrosion, no cracked solder joints, no swollen battery. The factory FCC ID on that fob matched what it should. The blade cut was intact and readable. Everything that costs money to replace was fine.
I transferred the board into a fresh shell, seated new rubber button pads, cut a replacement blade to match her existing cut, and put a new CR2032 in while everything was open anyway. Tested all three buttons, tested the ignition, checked that the remote was locking and unlocking cleanly at distance.
The whole thing took less than an hour in her driveway. She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted for a job the dealer was not even going to offer her, because dealers typically sell whole keys, not shell swaps.
The electronics inside these keys can outlast several housings. The housing is just plastic and rubber. It is the part that takes the abuse.
