Got a call from a guy near Moorpark College whose 1999 Z3 roadster was sitting in the lot with zero keys. He'd had one key for years, never made a spare, and it finally disappeared somewhere between his bag and the parking spot. Searched twice. Nothing.
I told him I could handle it mobile, same day.
When I got there, I started with the HU58 Lishi tool to pick the door and decode the wafer positions for the blade cut. The Z3's lock is the older HU58 profile, not the HU92 that later BMWs use. Once I had the door open, I pulled the EWS2 module from behind the glovebox area to read the stored key data and synchronize a new transponder slot.
The 1999 Z3 uses a Philips PCF7935 chip, also called an ID44. I wrote the rolling code values to a fresh chip, married it to the EWS2 module, then synced the EWS with the DME using the ISN (Individual Serial Number) so the engine computer would accept the new key as authorized.
Cut the HU58 blade on my mobile machine, slid the key in, and the M52TU inline-six fired on the first turn. No codes, no drama.
He stood there watching with his hands on his head like he couldn't believe the car was running again. Whole thing took about an hour. A dealer would have meant a flatbed ride and a multi-day wait for parts alone.
