2000 Cadillac Eldorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to adding a spare?

More. On the 2000 Eldorado, adding a spare when you have a working fob is a simpler process. All-keys-lost means the vehicle's security system has to be accessed and the key memory handled differently, which adds time and complexity. The gap in cost between "I have one working key" and "I have zero keys" is real.

Q: Are aftermarket fobs for the 2000 Eldorado cheaper, and do they actually work?

They can be cheaper upfront. For a vehicle this age, the fob hardware is a known quantity and aftermarket options exist. The issue owners run into is build quality on the shell and buttons. On a fob that's already 20-plus years old from the factory, the last thing you want is a replacement that starts falling apart in another year.

Q: My 2000 Eldorado fob worked fine yesterday and now the car won't respond to it at all. What happened?

A few things can cause that on these. First suspect is always the CR2032. Even a battery that's only a year old can drop below the threshold the receiver needs, especially in heat. California summer heat sitting in a parked car accelerates battery drain on these older fobs noticeably. If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring it back, the fob may have lost its pairing to the vehicle.

Q: Can I just buy a fob online and program it myself to my 2000 Eldorado?

There is an onboard programming procedure for adding fobs on some late-90s and early-2000s GM vehicles that involves the ignition and door locks, but whether it works reliably depends on the specific setup and whether the vehicle's security system cooperates. It also typically requires that you already have a working programmed fob in hand to initiate the sequence. If you're starting with zero working fobs, the onboard method won't get you there. A fob bought online is just the hardware.

2000 Cadillac Eldorado Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a customer over on The Avenue in Ventura. She'd bought her 2000 Eldorado used a few years back and got exactly one fob with it. She'd been meaning to get a spare cut forever. Then the fob went through a full laundry cycle in her jacket pocket, and that was that.

The fob came apart. The housing had warped just enough that the battery was making intermittent contact, and two of the four buttons had separated from the board inside. The blade was still intact, so she could get in manually, but the remote was done.

I met her in the parking area near her building. The blade from her original key gave me the cut to work from, so I could duplicate it directly without decoding the lock. For the fob, the internal board had water damage and wasn't salvageable, so I built a replacement using a verified OEM-spec unit and got it programmed to the car on site. The whole job ran under an hour.

She mentioned the dealer had told her they'd need to order the part and she'd have to come back. I had everything on the van.

Cadillac Eldorado Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2000 Cadillac Eldorado key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Dealers on late-90s and early-2000s GM vehicles tend to charge for the part, the labor, and sometimes a diagnostic fee on top, and they often need to order the fob if they don't stock it. With EZ Car Keyz, you're getting the fob and the programming done on site in one trip, for a fraction of what a dealer visit runs.
