2021 Genesis G90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to making a spare?

More, and the reason is the process. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a relatively quick registration job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer memory has to be fully reset first, then new fobs are registered from a blank state. That reset process on the G90 has a timed sequence built into it. You can't rush it.

Q: Are aftermarket smart keys worth it for a 2021 Genesis G90?

The G90 is not a vehicle where I'd cut corners on the fob. Aftermarket shells vary a lot in quality, and if the internal board doesn't match what the vehicle expects, you can end up with a fob that programs but has unreliable range, inconsistent button response, or touch-unlock that works one day and doesn't the next. I use OEM-spec fobs on these. Tested and confirmed working before I leave your driveway. You're not paying for a gamble.

Q: My G90 fob works for lock and unlock but the door handle touch sensor is hit or miss. Is the key failing?

This is a known source of confusion on the G90. The touch-to-unlock handles on this car depend on the fob being detected by the exterior antennas, not just the main cabin receiver. If the fob battery is marginal, the handle sensors lose reliable communication before the lock and unlock buttons do, because pressing a button actively wakes the fob and boosts the signal. Passive handle detection is lower power and drops out first.

Q: Can I program a second G90 smart key myself at home?

No. The G90 does not have an onboard self-programming sequence for smart keys. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button combination, nothing you can do in the driveway without diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. Professional tools are required to register a fob to this system. If you bought a fob online, it still needs to be programmed by someone with the right equipment before it will do anything.

2021 Genesis G90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was leaving a late dinner near Butterfly Beach in Montecito when she realized her bag was gone. Purse, wallet, phone, and both G90 fobs. Her husband reached me from his phone while she was still talking to mall security.

All-keys-lost after a theft is a different job than adding a spare. The priority isn't just getting new keys made. It's making sure the stolen fob is completely dead to the vehicle before that car moves. A thief with a working proximity fob can walk up to the G90 days later and it opens for them like nothing happened. The stolen fob needed to be erased from the system, not just replaced around.

I got there while she was still on-site. Used my diagnostic equipment to access the immobilizer, wiped the stored key data entirely, and registered two new fobs from scratch. Cut the emergency blade insert on both so they'd work mechanically if the fob battery ever died. Tested every button, both door handles, and the start button with each fob before packing up.

The dealer her husband called earlier that evening quoted them a multi-day wait, said the car would need to be towed to the service bay, and mentioned the stolen fob concern almost as an afterthought. She drove home that night. The stolen fob is erased. It won't open those doors or start that engine for anyone.

What stuck with me was how calm she was once the car was sorted. The rest of the night was still a mess, but at least that part was handled.

Genesis G90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the least expensive way to replace a key for a 2021 Genesis G90?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before the dealer. The dealer route for a 2021 G90 smart key involves ordering the part, scheduling service, and in most cases they want the car on-site, which means a tow if you have no working key. That adds up fast and takes days. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in the Montecito and Butterfly Beach area. Same key, same programming, done on the spot.
