2022 Genesis G90
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What actually is a smart key and why does it need programming?

A smart key is a fob that handles two separate jobs. The physical blade inside it operates the mechanical locks and the ignition cylinder if needed as a backup. The electronics inside the fob communicate wirelessly with the vehicle security system so the car knows an authorized key is present before it allows the engine to start. A new fob that hasn't been enrolled yet is just plastic and metal to your car. The vehicle has no record of it.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much more for a G90 key replacement?

A few reasons stack up. The parts department marks up the fob, the service lane bills at a full shop labor rate, and you're paying for the building whether your job takes 20 minutes or two hours. On top of that, if you're already stranded without a working key, you may be looking at a tow just to get the car there.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it for me?

Depends on what you bought. The 2022 G90 uses a specific fob, and aftermarket versions vary widely in quality. Some third-party fobs will pair and hold; others won't register cleanly or will drop out of the system after a short time. If you bring a fob that turns out to be incompatible, you've spent money on a part that won't work and we still need a correct one to finish the job.

Q: Does an all-keys-lost situation on the G90 erase the old fobs so nobody can use them?

Yes. That's part of the procedure. When I run an all-keys-lost enrollment on your G90, the system wipes every previously registered fob from memory before the new key is enrolled. A lost or stolen fob from before that point becomes useless to the vehicle. It won't start the car and it won't be recognized by the security system. That's the security point of doing it correctly rather than just adding a key to whatever was already registered.

2022 Genesis G90 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A boat broker parked in the Coast Village lot near the beach club came up short: no fob, and a 2022 Genesis G90 sitting there going nowhere. Best guess was it went into the water somewhere on the dock earlier that morning. He had calls to make and zero time to deal with a tow to a Genesis dealer an hour out.

He'd already gotten one quote from another locksmith in the area. That guy's plan was to drill the emergency cylinder. The number he threw out was well over what I charge for an all-keys-lost job done correctly.

I decoded the door lock mechanically, reading the wafer positions without touching the internal components. That gave me the factory cut depths. I cut a fresh blade to match, then moved to the OBD port to run the all-keys-lost procedure, wipe any previously registered fobs from the system, and enroll the new smart key. The whole job was done in the lot. His original cylinder works exactly as it did from the factory.

The other locksmith's quote was way above what he paid me. No drilling, no replacement cylinder, no tow, no waiting around at a dealership. He was back to his calls before lunch.

Genesis G90 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2022 Genesis G90 smart key have?▼

Seven. The fob includes lock, unlock, and the other buttons for additional functions. When I build a replacement on site, every button gets tested against the vehicle before I close up and leave. If one isn't responding the way it should, we sort it out right there in the lot.
