1995 Honda Prelude
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does a 1995 Honda Prelude use?

It's a standard metal key. No remote, no buttons, no battery. You insert it into the door lock and the ignition cylinder like any traditional key. There is no fob to replace and no electronics to program. The key works entirely by its cut pattern matching the lock. If you need a replacement, the job is cutting a new blade either from a key code on record or by decoding the cuts directly from your lock cylinder. That's it.

Q: How long does key replacement take compared to going to the dealer?

With me, usually under 30 minutes on site, sometimes faster if the situation is clean. The 1995 Prelude is a mechanical key car, so there's no programming step eating up time. The dealer path on a vehicle this age is a different experience. You're looking at scheduling, check-in, waiting for a tech to become available, and paperwork on both ends. For a car that just needs a blade cut, that overhead adds up fast.

Q: I'm locked out with no working key at all. Can you still get me into a 1995 Prelude?

Yes. This is a standard lockout and key-cutting job. I can pick or decode the door lock to get you in, then use what I read from the cylinder to cut a working key on the spot. You don't need a key on hand, a key code, or a trip to anyone else first. One visit handles the lockout and the replacement key.

Q: My 1995 Prelude key turns but feels loose and worn. Should I replace it before it fails completely?

Worth doing sooner rather than later. A worn key blade has rounded cuts that can start slipping in the cylinder, and once it wears down far enough you can end up with a key that goes in but won't turn, or worse, a blade that breaks off inside the ignition.

1995 Honda Prelude Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call on a Tuesday afternoon from a guy parked in a lot just off the main strip in Downtown Oxnard. He'd snapped his key off in the door lock. Not in the ignition, in the door. The bow was in his hand and the blade tip was stuck inside the cylinder.

He'd already called the Honda dealer. They told him to tow it in, said key work would be a few days out on the schedule, and gave him a number that made him pause. He wasn't sure if he even needed a dealer for a car this old.

He didn't.

I pulled up to the lot, extracted the broken blade fragment from the cylinder, and decoded the cuts while I was in there. Cut a new key blade to match, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Total time on site was under thirty minutes.

He genuinely seemed surprised it was that fast. He said he'd been sitting in the lot for two hours before he found me because he assumed this was going to be a whole ordeal. It wasn't. Sometimes the older, simpler jobs are the easiest wins.

Honda Prelude Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Honda dealer to get a replacement key for a 1995 Prelude?▼

No, and honestly a dealer is one of the slower ways to handle this particular car. The 1995 Prelude uses a mechanical key, so there's no proprietary programming system tying you to the dealership. Any qualified locksmith with the right key blanks and cutting equipment can do this job on location.
