1999 Honda Prelude Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy in Heritage Square, Oxnard. His 1999 Prelude was sitting in the driveway, cranking strong but refusing to start. He had been through the usual internet checklist already: checked the main relay under the dash, swapped the fuel pump relay, even sprayed starter fluid into the intake. Nothing.
He told me the green key light on the instrument cluster was blinking steadily. That is the immobilizer telling you it does not recognize the transponder. His key was original, worn down pretty good, and the plastic head had a hairline crack running right through where the ID13 chip sits.
I got to him in about 35 minutes. Pulled my diagnostic gear and read the immobilizer ECU through OBD. The system still had two keys registered, which is standard from the factory on fifth-gen Preludes. The chip in his everyday key was intermittent from the crack letting moisture in over 25 years.
Cut a fresh BHD106-PT blank on the truck, cloned the ID13 chip value onto a new transponder, and tested it. Engine caught on the first turn. No crank-no-start, no blinking green light, just the car running the way it should.
He stood there holding his old cracked key like he was deciding whether to keep it for sentimental reasons. I told him it made a decent backup if he taped the head together and kept it in a drawer. He laughed and tossed it in the glovebox.
Whole thing took about 25 minutes on site. A fraction of what the dealer wanted, and he never left his own driveway.
