1997 Honda Prelude
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the programming take once you're at my car?

For a standard add-a-key on the 1997 Prelude, figure 30 to 45 minutes total on-site, cutting included. All-keys-lost takes longer because the immobilizer reset has its own procedure before any new key can be registered. That pushes total time closer to 45 to 90 minutes depending on how the system responds. Either way, the job finishes at your location. You leave with a tested, working key.

Q: Can you get to my Prelude faster than a dealer can make a key?

Almost always, yes. A dealer visit for a key on a vehicle this age often means checking parts availability, waiting for a service writer, and then shop time on top of that. If they don't have the right blank on the shelf, they're ordering it, and you're waiting days. I come to your car with the equipment and blanks already in the van. No appointment, no parts delay, no shop wait.

Q: My 1997 Prelude cranks but shuts off immediately after starting. Could this be a key issue?

That specific symptom, engine starts for a second then dies, is a known sign that the transponder chip in the key isn't being read correctly by the immobilizer. It's one of the more common complaints on fifth-gen Preludes. It can happen when someone uses a non-transponder blank that was cut to the right profile but has no chip inside, or when the chip in an existing key has gone bad over time.

Q: Can I get a spare key cut at a hardware store or home improvement chain?

They can cut the blade, but it won't start the car. The 1997 Prelude uses a transponder key. A hardware store duplicate will turn the ignition and crank the engine, then the immobilizer shuts it down. The cut has to match and the chip has to be programmed. Hardware stores don't carry the right blanks or the equipment to program them.

1997 Honda Prelude Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A trail runner near Channel Islands Harbor texted me on a Saturday afternoon. He'd been out on a path along the water, keys in his shorts pocket, and somewhere on the trail they were gone.

Not in the car, not on the ground near the trailhead, just gone. His 1997 Prelude was sitting in a lot, locked, no key, no dealer open on a weekend, and no way to move it without help.

He dropped me his GPS pin. I loaded up the van and drove out to him.

The Prelude is a fifth-gen car, and these came from the factory with a transponder system that Honda was rolling out across the lineup in that era. The key head holds the chip. There's no remote, no buttons, just a key that has to match the immobilizer to let the engine run. I decoded the lock, cut a replacement key to his vehicle, and programmed the chip on-site using my equipment. We turned it over right there in the lot.

It started clean. He'd been sitting on a curb for two hours before I got there, and the whole job from my arrival to him driving out took under an hour.

He mentioned almost calling the dealer first, then realizing they were closed. That detail didn't surprise me at all.

Honda Prelude Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key for my Prelude after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Honda dealers keep regular business hours and a 1997 Prelude is not a priority vehicle for most service departments even when they are open. Weekends and evenings, you're usually looking at a closed service lane and no help until Monday. I work evenings and weekends around Channel Islands Harbor and the rest of Oxnard. The Prelude's transponder key isn't a dealer-only job. I can cut and program a replacement wherever your car is sitting.
