2013 Hyundai Veloster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost versus just adding a spare?

More. Noticeably more. When you have one working key, adding a spare is a relatively quick programming job because the vehicle's security system can verify the existing key during enrollment. When all keys are gone, the immobilizer has to be fully reset using a PIN code pulled from the vehicle, and every key you want active has to be programmed from scratch in that same session. It takes longer and requires more from the equipment side.

Q: Are aftermarket Veloster fobs worth buying, or should I stick with OEM?

Aftermarket fobs vary. Some work fine. Some look identical to the correct fob and still fail to pair because the internal components don't meet the tolerances the vehicle expects. The factory fob for this Veloster has a specific part number, and not every aftermarket unit that claims compatibility actually delivers it. If you've already bought one online, bring it. I'll tell you quickly whether it's worth programming or whether it's going to be a problem.

Q: My 2013 Veloster starts fine sometimes and then shows a key warning other times, but nothing has changed. What is going on?

This is one of the most common Veloster fob complaints. The intermittent key-not-detected warning with no obvious cause usually comes down to one of three things: a battery that reads acceptable but can't deliver adequate current during the authentication handshake, a slightly deformed battery contact inside the fob from a previous battery swap done with too much force, or the fob shell cracked just enough internally that the board moves under pressure.

Q: Can I program a second Veloster smart key myself at home?

No. The 2013 Veloster smart key system requires diagnostic equipment to register a new fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence or button combination that works here. That kind of onboard relearn only exists on older vehicles with a basic transponder key in an ignition cylinder. Smart key enrollment on this car goes through the OBD port with professional tools.

2013 Hyundai Veloster Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Windsor North, just off the River Ridge side, I got a call from a Veloster owner who was parked in his driveway going nowhere.

He'd had a second fob for a while, bought it online. It looked right, the buttons matched, the battery was fresh. He'd been meaning to get it programmed and kept putting it off. Then his main fob started acting up, range dropped to about two feet, and the push-button start got flaky. So now he had one fob barely working and one fob that was just a piece of plastic.

I pulled in, checked the working fob first. CR2032 was original from the looks of it, no date stamp, contacts had a little oxidation. Swapped in a fresh cell, cleaned the contact points, and the range came back immediately. That alone would have been enough for a lot of guys.

But he still wanted the second fob added, and honestly that was the smarter play. Programming a spare while a working key is present is a different job than all-keys-lost. It goes faster, costs less, and he'd leave with two working fobs instead of one aging one.

I paired the new fob through the diagnostic port, verified both fobs on every function, and confirmed the start button recognized either one clean. The whole thing happened in his driveway while he stood there drinking coffee.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait time of over a week just to get an appointment. I was there the same afternoon he called.

Hyundai Veloster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2013 Veloster key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Hyundai dealers typically add labor, programming fees, and parts markup that stack up fast. With EZ Car Keyz, we come to you in Oxnard, program on site, and charge a fraction of what dealers want. No towing, no appointment booked two weeks out, no waiting on a part to come in from a distribution center. The savings are real and the convenience is hard to argue with.
