Got a call from a guy stuck on the shoulder just off the Ventura Road shopping corridor in Oxnard. His 2013 Veloster, the key blade had snapped clean in the ignition cylinder. Half the blade jammed inside, the other half between his fingers.
He had already called someone else. That locksmith quoted a full ignition replacement over the phone without even seeing it. New cylinder, new keys, the whole deal.
I showed up with my HY14 Lishi tool. Slid it in alongside the broken fragment, caught the edge, and walked it out without touching the wafer surfaces inside the cylinder. No drilling, no damage. Once the piece was out clean I decoded the lock directly from the wafer readings and cut a fresh blade on site.
His fob, the SY5HMFNA04 four-button smart key, was perfectly fine. The electronics, the Hitag2 chip, all good. He just needed a new blade cut to code and paired through the OBD port. The whole process, extraction to test-start, took maybe 35 minutes.
He stood there watching me turn his original ignition with the new key, same lock, same cylinder, nothing replaced. Just sat there shaking his head for a second.
The other shop's approach would have cost him way more and left him waiting on parts. His car drove off the same way it came in, just with an intact key this time.
