She was in her driveway off Via Marina when I pulled up. The 2017 Veloster was sitting there looking fine, but the fob she handed me told a different story. The rubber on the buttons had gone shiny and soft, the seam along the back had a hairline crack running most of its length, and when I popped the blade out it wobbled in the housing instead of locking firm.
She had already been to the dealer. They told her the whole fob needed to be replaced and programmed fresh, and quoted her accordingly. What they skipped over was the part where the electronics inside were perfectly healthy. The board, the transponder, all of it. Just a shell that had given up after a few years of daily use.
I laid the fob on the hood, popped it open, and pulled the board out. No corrosion, battery contacts were clean, the chip was fine. Moved everything into a fresh shell, pressed in a new button pad, and seated the blade so it locked the way it should. Replaced the CR2032 while I was in there.
Walked every button. Proximity pickup at the handle, start button response, lock and unlock at range. All of it came back exactly right.
She didn't need a new key. She needed someone who looked at the actual problem instead of the easiest solution. The dealer route would have cost her a lot more for a result she already had sitting in her hand.
