I got a call from a guy parked near the Heritage Valley area of Fillmore. He was in a lot, 2021 Hyundai Veloster, and the push-button start was giving him nothing. No engine, no crank, just a key-not-detected warning on the dash. He'd already tried the usual: getting in and out, walking around the car, holding the fob closer to the button. Nothing.
I asked him one question before I drove out. When did you last change the fob battery. Long pause. "Never. I've had the car two years."
I told him to try something before I made the trip. Hold the fob flat against the start button and try again. He called back three minutes later. Car started. The CR2032 had died and the backup read worked.
That could have been the end of it, but he asked me to come anyway because he wanted the battery swapped properly and the fob tested end to end. Good call. When I got there I popped the fob open, swapped the CR2032, cleaned the battery contacts, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, and both of the remaining functions. Tested the touch sensors on the door handles. Tested start-button response from across the car, then from the driver seat. Everything solid.
He asked about a spare key. His car had never come with one, he said, and he'd just been running on one fob since he bought it. We talked through the process for adding a second fob. It requires diagnostic equipment to register it to the vehicle, but it's done on site, takes maybe 30 to 45 minutes, and costs a fraction of what the dealer quoted him when he called them later to check.
Running one fob on a push-button start vehicle is a gamble. I see it end badly more often than people expect.
