2016 Hyundai Veloster
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More, always. When you have a working key, adding a spare is a quick registration job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer memory has to be fully reset using a PIN pulled from the vehicle, and then every key you want active gets programmed in that same session. It takes longer and requires more from the equipment. The best move is getting a spare made while you still have one fob that works.

Q: Are aftermarket Veloster fobs cheaper and will they actually work?

Cheaper upfront, but the risk is real. Aftermarket fobs for Hyundai vary a lot in quality. Some work fine after programming. Others have contact issues, shell tolerances that do not match, or electronics that the vehicle's system will not accept. There is also a compatibility problem specific to Hyundai: several fobs sold online look nearly identical across multiple Hyundai and Kia models but are not interchangeable, and sellers do not always know the difference.

Q: My Veloster starts fine sometimes and other times just shows a key warning with no response to the start button. What is going on?

Intermittent no-start with a key-not-detected warning on these is almost always the fob, not the car. The 2016 Veloster system needs to read the fob before it will allow the start button to do anything. If the fob battery is getting weak, or if a contact tab inside the case has a slight bend from a past battery swap, the car will see it on some attempts and miss it on others.

Q: Can I program a second Veloster smart key myself at home?

No. The 2016 Veloster smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence. There is no ignition-turn trick or button combination that registers a new fob. Professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port is required to add a key to the system. If you bought a fob online planning to program it yourself, you still need a locksmith or dealer to finish the job.

2016 Hyundai Veloster Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy in Victoria Estates, Oxnard, late in the evening. His 2016 Veloster was sitting in the driveway and the fob had just stopped being recognized. Push-button start, no working key, and he was already looking up flatbed numbers for the morning. I told him to hold off.

When I pulled up, the car was locked and sitting there dark. He had no backup fob. All-keys-lost on the Veloster smart key system means connecting to the OBD port, pulling the vehicle PIN, wiping the immobilizer's key memory, and registering new keys from zero. That is the job. I ran through the procedure on his driveway, registered his replacement fob, and confirmed push-button start, door lock, and unlock before I packed up.

The part that got him was the timing. He had been mentally preparing for a tow, a dealer appointment two weeks out, and a wait on a backordered fob. None of that happened. It was done on-site, same night, for a fraction of what the dealer would have charged even before adding the tow bill.

Midnight in a Victoria Estates driveway is a normal Tuesday for me.

Hyundai Veloster Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a lost key for my 2016 Veloster?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Hyundai dealers tend to quote high on smart key replacement, and that price does not include towing the car in if you have no working key. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Oxnard, do the programming on-site, and the total is way less than the dealer route. No tow, no appointment, no waiting on parts to ship in.
