A yoga instructor near Dizdar Park had a 2006 Jeep Cherokee with a cracked key housing. The plastic around the blade pivot had split and the fob was barely holding together. She took it to the dealer and they told her the only option was a complete new key, cut and programmed, for about 395. What they didn't mention is that the electronics and chip inside were perfectly fine.
Your Cherokee uses a remote head key with 5 buttons on the face, a CR2032 battery inside, and either a SIP22 emergency blade tucked inside the housing or a full integrated blade depending on the model year. There's also a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer every time you try to start it.
I met her at her duplex driveway with replacement shells and my SIP22 Lishi. Her key's FCC ID was OHT692427AA. I swapped the circuit board and chip from her cracked housing into a fresh shell, verified every button and the wireless range, then cut a new emergency blade from the decode. The aftermarket shells I use are the same material and button layout as factory.
She paid about 185 for the full job. Dealer wanted 395 to replace parts that weren't even broken.
