Out near the Pleasant Valley Bike Trail in Camarillo, an electrician who works at the oil change shop off the main drag had been fighting his 2003 Jeep Cherokee ignition for weeks. Wiggling the key to get it to turn, pushing hard, sometimes just sitting there waiting a full minute before the cylinder cooperated. Heavy keychain hanging off it, like they all do.
He called the dealer and they wanted a new ignition cylinder, a new key, and reprogramming. He was about to book it when the oil change tech mentioned me.
I looked at the cylinder and it was worn wafers, not a dead unit. The Y160 keyway on these KJ Cherokees chews through wafer number three and four first, always the same ones. Before I touched anything mechanical I used my ACDP to pull the SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) data as a backup, because once you disturb the lock you want that safety net.
Decoded the cylinder, swapped the worn wafers, cut a fresh BY160-PT transponder key matched to the repaired lock. Programmed the ID 46 chip through the OBD port. I handed him the old wafers so he could see the wear pattern himself. He held them up to the light and just said, "That's it?"
Ignition turns smooth now, key slides in clean, and he kept everything that wasn't actually broken.
